Portraits of Ancient is a photographic series that approaches historical figures through presence, study, and inner alignment.
The series is based on the conviction that history remains active within the human figure, and that portraiture can serve as a vessel for continuity across time. Each work emerges from a sustained process in which contemporary individuals engage with historical personalities, allowing posture, gaze, and bearing to articulate character beyond representation.
The portraits are realized through disciplined observation and pictorial control. Light, space, and composition follow a classical photographic lineage aligned with the tradition of Alfred Stieglitz, treating the image as a medium capable of registering inner states.
As articulated by artist and mentor Relja Penezić, the figures themselves remain secondary to the system that enables their presence. The series operates as a structured method through which history enters the present as lived psychological form.
Portraits of Ancient functions as a study of memory, time, and the enduring capacity of the human image to carry historical depth.
